Investing with Harbor

Harbor's investors own operating companies through an indefinite fund and are paid from what those companies earn, year after year.

The hold is the strategy

Most traditional fund returns come from the sale. Ours come from the years in between, because there is no sale.

Decisions are made for the long hold, not for year four.

Nothing dressed up

Nothing is deferred to make a number look better for the next buyer.

The people stay

Employees and customers stay because the ownership stays, and that shows up in the earnings.

How and when investors are paid

Every year, from the companies' cash

Each year the companies pay out what they earned, after debt service and the growth in front of them. No sale is required to get liquidity.

Starting the year after a company is bought

A company's first distribution covers the first months it was held, and is paid early the following year., and every year after that.

Growing as the companies compound

Early distributions are the smallest they will ever be. As debt is paid down and reinvestment pays off, the same companies pay more.

Never in a lump

Harbor is built to be held, not timed. There is no date when capital comes back all at once, because the companies are held.

Why owners choose Harbor, and why that matters to investors

An owner who spent thirty years building a company usually cares what happens to it next. Buyers who can promise it stays, with its name on the door and its people in the building, are rare.

We promise the company staysWe keep the promiseOwners and their advisors call us firstInvestors get first look
For a seller
A simple process
A fair price
A company that outlasts them
For an investor
First look at businesses that rarely get shopped
Time to understand them properly
A price set in a conversation, not an auction

Every promise we keep to a seller makes the next owner more likely to call. That is the advantage, and it compounds the same way the companies do.

Who invests

Individuals, family offices and institutions. What they share is the view that long holds create value that short ones give away, and that stability for its people and its customers, creates value and is worth owning.

How we manage risk

Leadership

Every company we buy loses its owner eventually. Harbor is hands on from day one through whatever the owner transition looks like.

Concentration

Each company is bought with asset coverage and conservative debt, so a hard year at one doesn't put the others at risk.

Cycles

We are across multiple uncorrelated industries. Our vertical is Virginia, and it stabilizes us from a down cycle of one industry.

Key people

From the Harbor team, to the management team, to advisors and consultants, we build a group around each company.

Working with Harbor

Individuals, family offices and institutions invest directly in Harbor's fund. Everyone gets the same materials plus a data room built for diligence, references from the owners who sold to us, and as much time with the team as the process needs. We are glad to be diligenced.
